No. 75 'Eaters Drop Road Trip Opener, 5-2, at Wisconsin

Jacob Jung and No. 75 UCI were tripped up in Madison.

MADISON, Wisc. --- UCI's return to the rankings was met rather harshly by the Big Ten Badgers of Wisconsin who dropped the 'Eaters, 5-2, Friday afternoon at Neilsen Tennis Center.

The Badgers (4-0) continued its run of doubles points taking the initial point in the duel. The Hammel-Shibahara duo scored a tiebreaker-set win to even the doubles set. The undefeated tandem of Tyler Pham and Jonathan Poon looked to gain the point, but fell in their own tiebreaker set.

UC Irvine (1-6, 0-1) began singles well winning four of the six initial sets. The Badgers would however run off the first two points with wins at Nos. 4 and 1 to go up 3-0.

The 'Eaters wouldn't let the clinching point go that easily as Pham and Hammel each took their singles matches in straight sets to close the gap back to 3-2.

No. 3 Reo Asami and No. 6 Shuhei Shibahara each had the edge after winning the first set, but the pesky Badgers forced a third set and took the final two points to finish out the match.

The Anteaters finished up their Midwest road trip Saturday, February 9th with a 3:30 p.m. match against DePaul.
