'Eaters Shake Up Big West, Defeat No. 73 Cal Poly 4-3

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- The Anteaters stormed back into Big West play with a furious come-from-behind victory to upset the 73rd-ranked Cal Poly Mustangs, 4-3, Friday afternoon at Mustang Courts.

Cal Poly (8-8, 0-1) managed to attain the doubles point for the early lead. Jacob Jung and Justin Agbayani teamed up for a doubles win to avoid the sweep.

Reo Asami returned to the singles lineup, but would fall as the No. 2 to put UCI (4-15, 1-1) in a 2-0 hole. The 'Eaters would tie the match up with straight-set wins from Tyler Pham and Jacob Jung.

Andre Dome, ranked 22nd in the nation, regained the brief lead for Cal Poly at the No. 1 position, but Agbayani would tie it back up with a 7-5 second set win.

Shuhei Shibahara earned the all-important clincher at the No. 5. After falling 7-6 in the first set, he would right the ship and take the final two sets 6-2 each.

The win gives UCI a well-needed advantage in conference play as it is now 1-1. The win also starts April off well putting the 'Eaters at 4-15 overall and halting a difficult month of March.

Next stop will be at another tough Big West foe in the Gauchos. UCI plays at UCSB on Sunday, April 7th at 12:00 p.m.
