IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's tennis fought through a tough slate in 2012-13 to take the Big West regular season title. The Anteaters return to the court with another group of seasoned opponents for the 2013-14 season.
UCI's fall schedule includes trips to Malibu and Los Angeles for the ITA West Regionals and So Cal Intercollegiates. The fall kicks off with the ITA All-American Fall Tournament in Tulsa, Okla.
The regular season kicks off with a six-pack in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Anteaters will square with Arizona, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and the host Lobos of New Mexico in a three-day shootout to open up the season Jan. 17-19. Interestingly enough, Texas A&M-CC was the only off the bunch to make the NCAA Tournament in 2013.
UCI will return to California for three more road matches at NCAA Tournament participants UCLA and Sacramento State along with Fresno State.
Cal Poly visits for the first home match of the year to kick of Big West play Feb. 21. A quick trip up to Elite Eight program Pepperdine will be followed by seven straight home matches for the 'Eaters stretching from Mar. 7-16. The homestand features six East Coast schools and one NCAA Tournament program in UNC Wilmington.
UCI heads back on the road to Big West champion UCSB to begin a five-match trip that features another Big West match in UC Davis and an Idaho jaunt with Idaho and NCAA Tournament participant Boise State.
UCI comes back home for a doubleheader Apr. 16 featuring LMU at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center in the morning and Big West foe UC Riverside in the afternoon. Big West action wraps up at Anteater Tennis Stadium with visiting Hawai'i. UCI trips to San Diego State to wrap up the regular season.
UCI made a mark in Big West play in 2013 going 5-1 to take home a share of the regular season title. The Anteaters come up with a challenging non-conference schedule to prepare for the always-important Big West slate. UCI took on eight ranked opponents last season and even took down two ranked conference opponents.
The Big West Tournament rounds out the tennis season Apr. 24-27 at Indian Wells Tennis Garden once again.
The program returns its entire roster including its lone senior, Ryan Cheung. The 'Eaters also add University of Utah transfer, Rafael Davidian. Coach Kronemann returns to the helm for his eighth season as the head coach. He's collected 86 career wins and the 'Eaters have taken the Big West regular season or tournament title in four of the last five seasons.
