SEATTLE, Wash. - The UC Irvine men's tennis team (2-0) defeated Portland 4-3 Friday night in non-conference play at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.

Portland took a 1-0 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. Sophomore Sam Gould (Hamilton, New Zealand) and Steven Henderson (Poway HS) defeated Bryan Thorp and Daniel Coelho 8-3 in the No. 2 match.

In singles, UCI won four of the six matches to earn the victory. Gould clinched the win for the ‘Eaters with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Thorp in No. 2 singles. Senior Shimpei Suzuki (Woodbridge HS) beat Geoff Hernandez in the No. 3 match and senior Zac Tsai (Tarzana/Oaks Christian HS) defeated Evan Schleining in the No. 4 slot. Henderson downed Coelho 6-3, 7-6 in the No. 5 match.

UCI concludes the road trip Saturday as they face Washington at 2:00 p.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
