IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's tennis team (3-1) defeated San Francisco 4-3 Sunday afternoon in non-conference play at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
UCI took a 1-0 lead as they won two of the three doubles matches. Sophomores Steven Henderson (Poway HS) and Sam Gould (Hamilton, New Zealand) defeated Mark DeCastro and Einar Hart 8-6 in the No. 2 match and senior Shimpei Suzuki (Woodbridge HS) and sophomore Jon Kazarian (Rancho Palos Verdes/Peninsula HS) beat Ola Bakke and William Schumacher 8-6 in No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Mark DeCastro tied the match at 1-1 as he beat Steven Henderson 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 5 match. Zac Tsai put the ‘Eaters back up 2-1 downing Einar Hart 6-1, 6-3 in No. 4 singles. Thai Tu tied it back up at 2-2 beating sophomore Fabian Matthews (Corona del Mar HS) 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 1 match. Ola Bakke gave the Dons a 3-2 lead beating Suzuki 6-1, 7-6 in No. 3 singles. Junior Khunpol Issara (Bangkok, Thailand) tied it once again by downing Schumacher 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 6 slot. Gould closed out the match and earned the overall team win for UCI with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Asaf Cohen in the No. 2 match.
The 'Eaters will travel to Los Angeles Tuesday to take on No. 1 USC at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Stadium.
