Sicard, Jewett Highlight Saturday's Action on Home Turf

IRVINE, Calif. – Sophomore Isaiah Jewett and senior Lloyd Sicard highlighted an impressive outing for UC Irvine at the Anteaters' home-opening UCI Spring Break Collegiate Classic on Saturday.

"I am proud of the many accomplishments of our team today," head coach Jeff Perkins said. "We really competed against the field of athletes within the meet and found some great marks to move forward with."

Jewett continued to shine on the track, beating his previous lifetime-best by 5.24 seconds to win the 800m. Jewett clocked in at a blistering 1:49.14, a time that ranks first in the NCAA and fifth in program history. The Inglewood, Calif., native is also fifth in the country in the 400m after running a personal-record 47.38 last weekend.

In his 110m hurdle season debut, current school record holder Lloyd Sicard finished ahead of the pack by over four tenths of a second as he won the event in a Big West-leading 14.11. Sicard's mark is also the fourth-best in the NCAA this season. Freshman Alan Tantiwassadakran added a sixth-place showing as he registered a season-best 15.45.

Senior Brandon Howard led the 'Eaters in the 400 hurdles where he placed third in a season-best 53.58, while freshman Andres Woodruff contributed a personal-best 55.60 to come in eighth.

Freshman Evan Singletary (10.80) and sophomore Paul Resong (49.27) notched sixth-place finishes in the 100m and 400m, respectively.

Sicard, Resong, Howard and Jewett eventually closed out the meet in the 4x400 relay where they took third in a season-best 3:11.75.

In the field events, junior Jon Dickinson went for a personal-record 47-05.75 to come in sixth in the shot put. Sophomore Omar Valenzuela was also sixth in the discus (156-09).

UC Irvine returns to action next weekend as it travels to Riverside for the UCR Spring Track Classic, March 24-25.
