Honolulu, Hawaii - Second ranked UC Irvine swept No. 12 Hawaii, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-21) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Sunday at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Anteaters improve to 9-2 overall and 5-2 in the MPSF, while Hawaii drops to 6-7 overall and 3-5 in league play.
Junior outside hitter Kevin Tillie and senior opposite Carson Clark each had 10 kills, with Tillie hitting .643 and collecting a team-high six digs and Clark firing three aces. Senior middle blocker Dan McDonnell had seven kills, three aces and three block assists. Sophomore outside hitter Jeremy Dejno added seven kills and three blocks, while sophomore setter Daniel Stork led UCI to a .365 hitting percentage and 33 set assists and three blocks.
UCI out-blocked Hawaii 9 to 4.5 and had seven aces to the Warriors' three. Hawaii hit .130 (25-16-69) for the match.
Steven Hunt led Hawaii with eight kills and Nick Costello and Sam Biscaro led the team with five digs. Nick West added a team-high four block assists.
UCI scored six straight in the first set, which included two aces by Dan McDonnell and a kill and solo block by Kevin Tillie to go ahead 8-3. The Anteaters would take the set 25-17.
UCI started the second set with a triple block by McDonnell, Daniel Stork and Jeremy Dejno. A kill by Tillie followed by an ace by Carson Clark gave UCI a 5-3 edge and that was all the Anteaters needed as they went on to a 25-19 victory.
Three UCI blocks helped UCI to a 9-5 lead in the third. UCI led 24-17 before the Warriors made it interesting scoring four straight to close to 25-21, but Tillie put away the game and match winner, 25-21.
UCI returns home to host No. 4 Stanford Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the Bren Center.
