Stockton, Calif. -- No. 1 UC Irvine extended its winning streak to six with a sweep of No. 11 Pacific, 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-21) at the Alex G. Spanos Center Saturday evening.
UCI extends its winning streak to six, the longest currently in the MPSF, and improves to 10-3 overall and 7-3 in the MPSF. Pacific falls to 5-4 on the year and 3-4 in the MPSF.
All-american outside hitter Kevin Tillie paced UCI with 14 kills, three aces and a season-high 11 digs. Opposite Zack La Cavera put away 10 kills, while setter Daniel Stork had 31 set assists and a match-high 6 blocks. Outside hitter Jeremy Dejno recorded seven kills and middle blocker Scott Kevorken had six kills with libero Michael Brinkley adding eight digs in the win.
Pacific hit .105 as a team and was led by Adam Troy with nine kills. Libero Javier Caceres added nine digs, while setter Patrick Tunnell picked up 25 assists.
UC Irvine controlled the opening set, taking the game 25-16. As a team, the Anteaters hit .517 (16-1-29) for the set. A kill by Kevin Tillie, a Tiger attack error and an ace by Daniel Stork extended UCI's lead to 15-10. Behind the serving of Zack La Cavera, the Anteaters would string together kills by Jermey Dejno and Tillie plus a a block by Dejno, Stork and Scott Kevorken to set up set point 24-14.
The squads traded points to the 11-all mark of the second set before UC Irvine pulled away on a Pacific service error, consecutive aces by Tillie and a block by Dejno and Collin Mehring, 15-11 then eventually took the game 25-15.
Pacific and UC Irvine were tied at 17 all until UC Irvine rallied for three straight points on a kill by La Cavera and two Tiger errors to gain control of the third set. A kill by Tillie ended the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
UCI returns home to entertain UC Santa Barbara on Valentine's Day (Feb. 14) at 7:00 p.m. in the Bren Center.
