Irvine, Calif. – No. 11 UC Santa Barbara upset No. 4 UC Irvine, 3-1 (30-32, 30-32, 30-28, 30-25) at the Bren Center Friday.

UCSB goes to 2-5 on the year and 2-2 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action, while UCI drops its third straight and falls to 4-4 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Middle blocker Kevin Wynne recorded a match-best five blocks assists, while brother Ian Wynne totaled a career-high 38 set assists and two aces.

In the first set, UCI battled back from a 25-23 deficit with the help of an Anthony Spittle solo and block assist to take a 27-26 lead. The teams traded points until 30-30 when the Gauchos used a block and a kill by Jeff Menzel to take the set, 32-30.

UCSB jumped out to a quick 10-5 lead and continued to lead 21-17 before UCI rallied to out-score the Gauchos 5-1 to knot the score at 22-22 on an Ian Wynne service ace. The teams would match each other point for point until the Anteaters would use consecutive UCSB attack errors, the last on a block by Kevin Carroll and Bryan Simmons to push the score to set point 29-27. The Gauchos would respond scoring the next two points on a UCI serving and attacking error to tie the score at 30 all. A UCSB service error was followed by a Cole Reinholm kill to give the Anteaters the 32-30 win. Reinholm record six kills and Connor Hughes had four kills to lead the Anteaters.

In the third set, UCI, who trailed 17-22, would narrow the lead to 23-22 on a block by the Wynne brothers. A Hughes kill, a block by Hughes and Kevin Wynne was followed by an Ian Wynne service ace erased a two-point deficit and gave UCI the 26-25 lead. UCSB would score the next three points on a block and kills by Jake Rosener and Scott Slaughter. A kill by Jordan DuFault and a Cory Yoder solo block tied the set at 28-28, but UCSB would score the final two points on UCI miscues to grab the 30-28 victory.

The Gauchos took a 20-17 lead on a pair of Dylan Davis service aces in the fourth set and that was all the separation they needed as UCSB would win, 30-25.

UCI will host Princeton Tuesday (Jan. 26) at 7:00 p.m. in Crawford Hall.
