No. 11 UC Irvine Upsets No. 3 BYU, 3-0

Final Stats

Irvine. Calif. – No. 11 UC Irvine upset No. 3 BYU, 3-0 (34-32, 30-26, 30-23) in front of 1,458 fans at the Bren Center Friday.

 

Outside hitter Jordan DuFault led UCI with 15 kills and five digs.  Opposite Carson Clark added 14 kills, while middle blocker Austin D’Amore registered eight kills, hit .800 (8-1-10) and had a match-high five block assists. Setter Anthony Spittle totaled 44 set assists, five digs and three blocks. Middle blocker Kevin Wynne recorded seven kills and five total blocks and outside hitter Cory Yoder added six kills and three blocks. Libero Kenny Webster also had five digs.

 

BYU was led by Andrew Stewart with 15 kills followed by Robb Stowell with 12 and Futi Tavana with eight kills off the bench. Libero Joel Silva had a match-best seven digs, while Reed Chilton had 33 set assists.

 

UCI held a 12 to 6.5 advantage in blocking and out-hit the Cougars, .333 to .255. The Anteaters had a season-low nine service errors.

 

BYU used a kill by Andrew Stewart and an Anteater attack error to sneak ahead 24-22 in the first set. BYU continued to lead before a fingertip push over by Kevin Wynne tied the set at 26-26. The teams would trade points until UCI had back-to-back kills by Austin D’Amore and Cory Yoder to end the game 34-32.

 

The Anteaters jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead and never looked back as they took the second set 30-26. UCI locked down the net, rejecting five Cougar attempts during the game.

 

UCI had a kill by Carson Clark followed by a ball handling error by the Cougars and a block by D’Amore and Anthony Spittle to take a 17-14 advantage. BYU narrowed the lead to 23-22 on a kill by Futi Tavana which caused UCI to take their final timeout. Out of the break, UCI scored five straight, including three consecutive BYU attack errors, to put the game out of reach, 28-22. UCI would win the set 30-23 on a solo block by Carson Clark. BYU hit just .194 in the final game.

 

The Anteaters snapped a three-match losing streak and go to 6-7 on the year and 2-6 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. BYU is 7-4 overall and 5-3 in league play.
