UC Irvine Beats Pacific, 3-1

Stockton, Calif. --  Opposite Carson Clark recorded 20 kills to lead 11th-ranked UC Irvine to a 3-1 (30-21, 30-28, 29-31, 30-22) victory over Pacific at the A.G. Spanos Center Friday.

 

Clark, who has recorded 20 or more kills eight times this year, recorded three service aces and eight digs to go with his 20 kills. Outside hitter Jordan DuFault totaled 14 kills and five aces, while outside hitter Cory Yoder  had 12 kills and a match and season-high 11 digs. Setter Anthony Spittle recorded 55 set assists with middle blocker Kevin Wynne adding seven kills.

 

Pacific was led by Taylor Hughes who match Clark with 20 kills. Jason Borchin had 11 kills and Florian Gornick recorded a match-high 12 digs.

 

Carson Clark hit .700, putting away seven kills with no errors in 10 swings as the Anteaters took the first set 30-21. Jordan DuFault and Austin D’Amore each fired two service aces

 

In the second set, UOP led 13-12 then had kills by Jason Borchin and Florian Gornik to open a 15-12 advantage. UCI rallied on a Tiger service error, an ace by Kevin Wynne and a kill by DuFault to knot the score at 15-15. A kill by Clark and a Pacific attack error gave UCI set point, 29-26, but a kill and an ace by Gornik delayed the win until Clark added another kill to clinch the set, 30-28.

 

The third set saw 17 ties and five lead changes.  With the score tied 29-29, UCI had a service error and an attack error to give Pacific the 31-29 victory and force a fourth game.

The Anteaters jumped out to quick 10-3 lead in the fourth set. UC Irvine never relinquished the lead, scoring the final three points of the game to take the set, 30-22, and the match, 3-1.

The Anteaters even their season record at 7-7 and go to 3-6 in the MPSF, while UOP goes to 6-8 overall and 0-8 in league. UCI will battle fifth-ranked Stanford Saturday (Feb. 13) at 7:00 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.
