No. 12 UC Irvine Knocks Off No. 5 UCLA, 3-1

Los Angeles, Calif. – Jordan DuFault had 20 kills and Cole Reinholm totaled 19 kills as No. 12 UC Irvine knocked off No. 5 UCLA 3-1 (32-34, 30-23, 30-28, 30-28) at Pauley Pavilion Friday night.
UCI is 10-10 overall and 6-9 in the MPSF, while UCLA goes to 10-9 on the year and 8-7 in league action.
DuFault led UCI hitting .457 recording 20 kills with four errors in 35 attempts. Reinholm came off the bench to spark UCI with 19 kills, hitting .405 (19-4-37)and firing two aces. Libero Kenny Webster collected a match and career-high 18 digs. Austin D’Amore had a match-high nine total blocks and two aces, while Cory Yoder added 13 kills and nine digs. Setter Ian Wynne recorded 55 set assists and 11 digs. The Anteaters out-blocked the Bruins 13 to 9.5.
UCLA's Jack Polales led all players with 21 kills and had 10 digs. Garrett Muagututia recorded 16 kills followed by Jeremy Casebeer with 11 kills and 12 digs. Kyle Caldwell totaled 52 set assists, while libero Tom Hastings had 14 digs.
In the first set, UCLA led 29-27 before the Anteaters used three Bruin errors, including two blocks by Austin D’Amore, to get to their first set point, 30-29. UCI would have two more set points but the Bruins battled back and would win the set 34-32 on consecutive UCI attack errors.
UCI would take a 7-4 lead in the second set on an Austin D’Amore service ace. UCLA would then go on a 9-3 spurt to jump ahead 13-11. With the score tied 19-19, Cole Reinholm recorded a kill which was followed by two Bruin attack errors to give the Anteaters the 22-19 advantage. That was all the separation they would need as UCI won the set 30-23. Cole Reinholm came off the bench to spark the Anteaters with six kills. UCI hit .306 (13-2-36) while UCLA hit just .148 (19-11-54).
With the score tied 19-19, UCI used an ace by Reinholm and consecutive UCLA attack attempts that sailed out to take the 22-19 advantage. The Bruins tied the set at 22-22 on an ace by Garrett Muagututia. The teams would trade points and were tied at 28-28 before UCI had a kill by Kevin Carroll followed by a brother block by Kevin and Ian Wynne to give the Anteaters the 30-28 victory. A perfect pancake dig by Kenny Webster saved the rally on the final point. Reinholm added another six kills in the set
UCLA jumped out to a quick 8-4 lead in the fourth set, but UCI caught the Bruins at 11-11 on a Jordan DuFault ace. The Bruins would lead 24-19, but UCI would rally outscoring the Bruins, 7-2 tying the set on a Reinholm ace and took its first lead 27-26 on a kill by Cory Yoder. DuFault would end the match with a kill, 30-28.
UCI will host Lewis in a non-conference match Monday at 7:00 p.m. at Crawford Court.
