Feb. 24, 2010
Irvine, Calif. -- UC Irvine's men’s volleyball 2009 national championship was named the LA Sports Greatest Moment of 2009 for a Division I school other than UCLA or USC at the fifth annual LA Sports Awards last Friday at the JW Marriott at L.A. Live.
The awards show will be broadcast by Fox Sports West on Friday (Feb. 26) at 10:45 p.m.
Head coach John Speraw, assistant coach Mark Presho and All-Americans Carson Clark and Jordan DuFault were in attendance to accept the award created by Tiffany & Co.
The LA Sports Awards are presented annually by the Los Angeles Sports Council to celebrate the greatest moments of the year in sports in the Los Angeles/Orange County area. UCI’s baseball team won the Division I greatest moment in 2007.
A “moment” refers to anything from a specific instant in time -- such as a winning goal, hit or shot -- to a special event, individual or team record, or career achievement. Nominated moments must have taken place in the local area, or have involved a local athlete or team.
The awards ceremony also included a countdown of the year’s Top 10 moments in ranked order as selected by a blue-ribbon media panel, along with the naming of the Sportsman, Sportswoman, Coach and Sports Executive of the Year. The Anteaters sat with the Sportswoman of the Year, World Champion sprinter, Allyson Felix. For a complete listing of winners and nominees see the LA Sports website.
