UC Irvine Falls to No. 3 Stanford 12-5

IRVINE, Calif. --- Seventh-ranked UC Irvine fell to No. 3 Stanford, 12-5, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Sunday afternoon at Anteater Pool.
Jacob Smith and Ryan McCarthy scored three goals each to help Stanford improve to 19-1 overall and 6-0 in the MPSF.
Greg Enloe gave UCI (14-8, 2-3 MPSF) a 1-0 lead with 3:34 left in the first quarter but the Cardinal scored the next four goals, two by Smith, to go up 4-1 early in the second quarter.
UCI's Sam Figueroa converted a penalty shot with 5:14 left in the half to pull the `Eaters within 4-2 but Smith and McCarthy scored back-to-back goals to give the Cardinal a 6-2 halftime lead.
Stanford outscored the `Eaters 4-1 in the third quarter and a goal by McCarthy with 4:46 remaining in the game gave the Cardinal its largest lead of the day at 11-3.
Senior Tom Kruip scored a pair of goals for UCI and senior goalie Erik Evered recorded 13 saves.
Drac Wigo and Paul Rudolph added two goals apiece for Stanford and goalie Jimmie Sandman had nine stops.
UCI hosts 10th-ranked Concordia in a non-conference game later today at 6:00 p.m.
