No. 7 UC Irvine Edged by No. 5 Pepperdine in Overtime Thriller

IRVINE, Calif. --- Pepperdine's Christian Cardey's goal with 19 seconds remaining in the fifth overtime period lifted the fifth-ranked Waves to a 15-14 win over the No. 10 Anteaters Sunday at Anteater Pool. The loss dropped UCI to 15-10 (3-4 MPSF) overall while Pepperdine climbed to 11-10 overall and 3-4 in conference action.
Pepperdine took a 3-1 lead in the first quarter on a goal by J.P. MacDonell but the Anteaters cut the lead to one at 4-3 on a shot by Tom Kruip at the 1:20 mark.
A goal by Clayton Snyder put the Waves up by two in the second quarter but Brandon Johnson and Kyle Baxter scored back-to-back goals as UCI pulled even at 5-5 with 4:40 remaining in the quarter. Griffin Lerman's shot put the Anteaters ahead at the 2:59 mark and Greg Enloe buried a shot with 2:18 remaining to give UCI a two-goal lead at 7-5. Each team added a goal as UCI took an 8-6 halftime lead.
The Waves rallied with a pair of goals midway through the third quarter to pull to within one on MacDonell's penalty shot and the senior tied the game at 10-10 with a goal at 6:48 in the fourth. Pepperdine claimed a 13-12 lead in with 52 seconds remaining in regulation on a goal by Danny White but Kyle Baxter's goal with one second remaining would force overtime.
UCI took the first lead at 14-13 in the extra period on a Johnson goal but Cardey answered with 1:46 in the second overtime.
UCI's Matt Johnson had 15 saves for UCI while Tommy O'Connell registered 14 saves for the Waves.
