UC Irvine Downs UC Santa Barbara, 12-9, at MPSF Tournament
Nov. 28, 2009 LOS ANGELES --- UC Irvine capitalized on a big third quarter in defeating UC Santa Barbara, 12-9, in a fifth-place bracket game of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship Tournament at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium Saturday. The sixth-seeded Anteaters and No. 7 Gauchos were tied 5-5 at halftime before UCI had a five-goal outburst in the third period to build a 10-7 lead entering the final quarter. UCI opened the third quarter with consecutive goals by Tom Kruip (7:25), Greg Enloe (6:42) and James Frank (4:06) to take an 8-5 lead and the 'Eaters maintained at least a two-goal lead the remainder of the game. Tom Kruip's goal with 6:07 remaining in the fourth quarter provided UCI its largest lead of the game at 12-7. Tom Kruip led UCI (16-12) with four goals and Enloe added two. Junior goalie Matt Johnson registered seven saves. Milos Golic and Zsombor Vincze scored three goals each for UCSB (12-16). The Anteaters meet fifth-seeded Pepperdine Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in the fifth-place game.
