UC Riverside Has Big Second Half To Beat UC Irvine, 64-53

Riverside, Calif. – UC Riverside used a 17-2 run late in the second half to help the Highlanders come back and defeat UC Irvine, 64-53 at the Student Recreation Center Saturday.

UC Riverside (7-12, 4-2) scored 47 second half points, which is tied for the second most given up by the Anteaters in the final 20 minutes this season. The Highlanders shot 53.5 percent (23-43) from the floor for the game and 76.2 percent (16-21) in the second half. UC Irvine (6-14, 3-5) shot 30.4 percent from the field for the game and did not register a three-pointer for the first time this season (0-8).  The Anteaters are 1-9 on the road this year.

UCI held a nine point lead (49-40) with 8:07 before the Highlanders went on a 17-2 run to take a 57-51 lead with 2:49 to go. UCI would manage just two more free throws the rest of the game as UCR was 7-9 from the line to close out the game. UCI made just three field goals in the final 10:51 of the game.

UC Riverside jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead to start the game, but Mikah Maly-Karros scored the Anteaters’ first field goal at 14:20 to tie the game at 5-5. UCI capped a 9-2 run on a pair of Maly-Karros free throws with 3:13 remaining to take a 18-14 lead. UCR would score the final three points of the half to give UCI the 18-17 advantage. The Anteaters shot just 19 percent from the floor (5-26) in the first 20 minutes, but were 8-10 from the free throw line. The Highlanders made two more baskets but were just 1-2 from the charity stripe.

Mikah Maly-Karros led UCI with her seventh double-double recording 21 points and a game-high12 rebounds. Maly-Karros was 11-13 from the free throw line. Rebecca Maessen had 13 points all in the second half, going 7-7 from the line. Jade Smith-Williams recorded six points, while Cheyenne Cathey had a career-high five points off the bench.

UCR’s Rhaya Neabors led the team with 21 points, hitting 7-8 from the floor including 3-4 from three-point range. Alyssa Morris totaled 17 points with nine of them coming from the charity stripe. Rheya Neabors was 7-11 from the field to end with 16 points. UCR did not get one point off the bench.
