UC Irvine Falls To CSU Bakersfield In Overtime

Irvine, Calif. – Cal State Bakersfield’s Amber Williams knocked down a three-pointer at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime and the Roadrunners went on to defeat UC Irvine, 78-72 in a non-conference game at the Bren Center Saturday.
After Williams hit the three-pointer with 40 seconds to go in regulation, both teams had one possession but failed to score sending the game into overtime tied at 65-65. Overtime was all Bakersfield as the Roadrunners hit 9-12 from the free throw line. UCI managed seven points on 3-8 shooting from the floor and hit just one of two free throws.
UCI’s Mikah Maly-Karros posted her 10th double-double of the year with a game-high 24 points and a career-tying 17 rebounds, which is the most by a Big West player this year. The sophomore forward also had four blocked shots before fouling out of the game with 2:25 to play in regulation. Guard Rebecca Maessen had 18 points, including 15 in the first half and six rebounds. Freshman Jazmyne White pulled down 11 rebounds, while freshman Cheyenne Cathey had a career-high eight points off the bench. Guard Jade Smith-Williams recorded seven points and six assists.
The Roadrunners had balanced scoring led by Katie Williams with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Phynique Williams had 17 points, going 10-10 from the free throw line. Tamiko Davis recorded 14 points , 15 rebounds and four blocks, while Amber Williams had 11 points, including six in overtime.
UCI beat the Roadrunners on the boards 51-46, but were just 2-12 from three-point range. Bakersfield finished the game shooting 26-32 from the free throw line, while UCI was 16-21.
UCI scored 11 straight, which included nine points by Rebecca Maessen to go ahead 15-5 with 16:28 to go in the first half. The Roadrunners would close to five a (26-21) on a three-pointer by Katie Williams, but UCI would respond scoring the next seven, six from Maly-Karros to build back a 12-point cushion (33-21). The Anteaters would take a 35-27 advantage into halftime.
CSU Bakersfield would out-score UCI 8-2 out of the intermission to close to 37-35 with 17:02 left . The Anteaters would go on a 10-2 spurt to go back up by 10 (47-37) with 13:49 remaining. UCI continued to lead by 10 (49-39) before Bakersfield scored eight unanswered to narrow the margin to 50-47 with 9:36 left. The Anteaters would hold a 64-60 advantage at 2:13 before a layup by Bakersfield’s Kelley Tarver was followed a Jade Smith-Williams free throw with 1:15 to keep UCI ahead by three (65-62) setting up William’s game-tying three-pointer.
Cal State Bakersfield improves to 15-9 overall, while UCI goes to 8-15. The Anteaters return to Big West action traveling to Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday (Feb. 10) for 7:00 tip-off at Titan Gym.
