Cal State Fullerton Hits A Shot With 1.6 Remaining To Beat UC Irvine, 76-74

Fullerton, Calif. – Mya Oliver hit a shot with 1.6 seconds on the clock to give Cal State Fullerton a 76-74 victory over UC Irvine at Titan Gym Wednesday.
The Titans improve to 11-13 overall and 6-5 in the Big West, while UCI goes to 8-16 on the year and 5-6 in league action.
UCI took almost four minutes to score as Cal State Fullerton jumped out to a 8-2 lead. The Titans would build 20-5 cushion on a Lyndsey Grove three-pointer with 13:03 remaining in the first half. With the Fullerton leading 26-16, UCI went on a 7-1 run to close within five (27-22) at 4:59. The Titans would score the next four points to extend the margin back to nine (31-22). UCI would out-score the Titans 9-2 to go into halftime trailing 33-31.
The Anteaters would score the first six points out of intermission to take their first lead of the game 37-33 at 17:35. The lead was never more than four and there were six ties before Cal State Fullerton went up by three 73-70 on a pair of Ashley Ritchie free throws with 1:48 remaining. A Mikah Maly-Karros basket narrowed the lead to one (73-72) at 1:28 before CSF’s Jasmine Scott knocked down the first of two free throws to extend the lead to 74-72 with 30 seconds to go. Out of a UCI timeout, Maly-Karros hit a two-footer to tie the score at 74-74 with 11 seconds remaining. Cal State Fullerton’s Mya Olivier hit a baseline jumper with 1.6 seconds on the clock to give the Titans the victory.
UC Irvine was led by Mikah Maly-Karros with a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds. Rebecca Maessen and Keyonna Johnson each added 12 points. Cheyenne Cathey matched her career-high with eight points, going 4-6 from the field.
Cal State Fullerton had four players with double-digit points led by Megan Richardson’s 19, which included three three-pointers. Ashley Richie came off the bench to record 17 points and seven rebounds. Lyndsey Grove had 14 points, while Mya Olivier was 4-5 from the field including the game-winner for 11 points.
The Titans were 23-30 from the free throw line and 7-13 from the three-point arc. CSF out-rebounded UCI, 37-31. UCI shot 44.6 percent from the floor (25-56) and 51.6 (16-31) in the second half. The Titans shot 43.4 from the floor for the game and 50 percent (12-24) in the second half.
UC Irvine will travel to UC Davis Saturday (Feb. 13) for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at The Pavilion.
