UC Riverside Defeats UC Irvine, 80-66

Irvine, Calif. – UC Irvine’s Jade Smith-Williams recorded 31 points but it was not enough as UC Riverside defeated the Anteaters, 80-66 at the Bren Center Thursday.
UC Riverside led 62-55 with 7:12 remaining in the game before UCI scored six straight, the last a layup by Rebecca Maessen, to narrow the score to 62-61 with 6:04 to go. The Highlanders would then end the game, outscoring UCI 18-5 to clinch the 80-66 victory.
UCI’s Jade Smith-Williams led all players with 31 points, going 8-20 from the floor and 11-14 from the line. Mikah Maly-Karros grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds to go with 16 points. Rebecca Maessen added 13 points and seven rebounds. The Anteaters out-rebounded the Highlanders 43-30.
UC Riverside was led by Alyssa Morris with 22 points and eight rebounds followed by Marissa Rivera who had 19 points and five blocks off the bench. Rhaya Neabors recorded 16 points, while TreShont Nottingham totaled 12 points.
UCR shot 50.9 percent (27-53) from the floor for the game, including 58.3 (14-24) in the second half. UCI shot 31.1 percent from the field overall and knocked down a season-high seven three-pointers.
UC Irvine opened the game with the first five points then watched UC Riverside go on a 13-2 run to take a 13-7 lead with 11:42 in the first half. The Highlanders would lead by five (25-20) before UCI closed to one (25-24) on a Jade Smith-Williams jumper at 3:18. UCR would go on a 8-2 spurt to go into the locker room with the 33-27 advantage.
TUC Irvine players wore pink warm-up shirts as the the game was dubbed "Think Pink" in an effort to spread breast cancer awareness.
