Cal Poly Defeats UC Irvine, 83-69 In Regular Season Finale

Irvine, Calif. – Cal Poly defeated UC Irvine, 83-69 in the regular season finale at the Bren Center Saturday.
Cal Poly improves to 18-10 overall and 11-5 in the Big West, while UCI goes to 9-20 on the year and 6-10 in the Big West.
UCI is the seventh seed in the Big West Tournament and will play No. 6 Cal State Fullerton in the second game of the first session Wednesday (Mar. 10) 30 minutes after the conclusion of the 12:00 p.m. game.
Mikah Maly-Karros set the UCI record for most free throws made in a season with 138, breaking Natasha Park's old mark of 135 in 1988-89. The forward led the Anteaters with 19 points, going 7-21 from the floor and 4-5 from the free throw line. Guard Keyonna Johnson recorded 13 points, while guard Rebecca Maessen totaled 12 points, a season-high six assists and six rebounds. Freshman forward Jazmyne White led all players with 12 rebounds and guard Jade Smith-Williams had eight points. Raquel Theus came off the bench to add seven points, while Lauren Spinazze had five points and senior KaJahna Johnson recorded three-points in her final game at the Bren.
Cal Poly had five players in double-figure scoring led by Kristina Santiago with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Rachel Clancy totaled 18 points followed by Becky Tratter with 16 points and Brittany Lange and Ashlee Stewart with 10 points each. The Mustangs, who shot 58.6 percent (17-29) from the floor in the second half, out-rebounded UCI, 46-35. Cal Poly ended the game shooting 55.2 percent (32-58) from the field overall.
Cal Poly led 36-33 at the half and continued to lead until a pair of free throws by UCI’s Rebecca Maessen tied the game at 59-59 with 8:11 remaining. Cal Poly would then score seven unanswered which was capped by a Becky Tratter layup to ahead 66-59 with 6:17 remaining. The Mustangs would end the game, out-scoring the Anteaters, 17-10 for the 83-69 final.
