Los Angeles, Calif. - UC Irvine defeated Loyola Marymount, 65-62 to pick up their first win of the season at Gersten Pavilion Friday.

 

UCI (1-2) had a trio of players in double digit scoring led by senior guard Rebecca Maessen with a season-high 17 points. Senior guard Keyonna Johnson totaled 12 points which ties her career best followed by junior guard Jade Smith-Williams with 10 points and five assists. Freshman Jazmyne White came off the bench to add nine points, six rebounds, two steals and a block. Junior center Kim Barnes had a team-high eight rebounds to go with six points. Freshman Lauren Spinazze chipped in seven points, including two three-pointers.

 

UCI shot 50 percent from the field in the second half (13-26) and 44 percent for the game (23-52). UCI was just 15-26 from the charity stripe on the night. LMU (1-2) shot 39 percent (22-56) from the floor and 76 from the free throw line (16-21). The Lions held a 44-30 advantage on the glass.


 

 

 

Loyola Marymount's Jenna Sybesma came off the bench and recorded a game-high 19 points and nine rebounds. Renahy Young had 16 points with 12 coming in the first half. Alex Cowling added 12 points in the loss.

 

After trailing 33-26 at halftime, UCI went on a 8-2 run to start the half , narrowing the LMU lead to 35-34 with 16:41 remaining. The Lions would build the lead back to nine at 12:46 and then by eight (48-40) at 11:28 before the Anteaters would score seven unanswered to close within one (48-47) at the 10:23 mark. LMU would scored the next four points before UCI turned up the defensive pressure and went on a 16-4 spurt to take the 63-56 advantage with 2:53 remaining. Loyola Marymount scored the next six points to close to 64-62 with 23 seconds to go. Freshman Jazmyne White would knock down a pair of free throws with 14 seconds to go for the final score. 

 

UCI will travel to Cal State Bakersfield Monday (Nov. 23) for a 7:00 p.m. game.
