Gonzaga Cruises To A 96-57 Victory Over UC Irvine

Spokane, Wash. – The Gonzaga women’s basketball team cruised to a 96-57 victory over UC Irvine in a non-conference game at the McCarthey Athletic Complex Sunday.

 

Gonzaga, who is receiving votes in both polls, improved to 10-4 overall, while UCI falls to 3-9 on the year.

 

The Bulldogs’ 96 points is a season-high for an Anteater opponent as is the 39 point deficit. Gonzaga, who shot 55 percent from the floor (42-76), scored 60 of their points in the paint with 29 points coming off 25 UCI turnovers.  The Zags also out-rebounded the Anteaters 49-35.

 

UCI trailed 15-13 on a Jade Smith-Williams’ three-pointer with 10:05 to go in the first half, but Gonzaga would score six unanswered to open an eight point gap (21-13) at 7:28. The Anteaters continued to trail by eight (29-21) at 4:49 before UCI rallied, scoring five of their own to narrow the lead to 29-26 at 3:53. Gonzaga would out-score the Anteaters 14-5 to go into intermission with the 43-31 lead.

 


 

 

Gonzaga continued to roll, out-scoring UCI 14-2 in the first three minutes of the second half to break open a 21-point (57-33) cushion. The Bulldogs out-scored the Anteaters 53-26 in the second stanza.

 

Five Gonzaga players recorded double-figure points led by Vivan Frieson with 25 to go with 11 rebounds. Heather Bowman totaled 15 points, while Katelan Redmon had 11 points and Courtney Vandersloot and Kayla Standish added 10 points. Standish matched Frieson with a game-high 11 rebounds and Vandersloot dished a game-high eight assists.

 

Jade Smith-Williams led UCI with 13 points followed by Mikah Maly-Karros with nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Kim Barnes also had nine points, while Keyonna Johnson pitched-in eight points and Rebecca Maessen recorded seven points. Jazmyne White recorded four points, six rebounds and a team-high three assists.

 

UCI will open up Big West Conference play traveling to UC Santa Barbara next Saturday (Jan.2) at 2:00 p.m.
