Trio Of Anteaters Earn All-Big West Honors

Irvine, Calif. – Jazmyne White was named Big West Conference Freshman of the Year and Mikah Maly Karros was named to the first team as the Big West Conference handed out accolades on Monday.
White becomes UCI’s first ever Freshman of the Year after ranking third in the conference in rebounding with a 6.8 average The forward also ranks fourth in the league in offensive rebounds (2.55) and ninth in steals (1.52). She is averaging 4.8 points and has swatted 18 blocks this season. White, who was also named to the All-Freshman Team, recorded a career-high 12 rebounds against Cal Poly last week.
Mikah Maly-Karros becomes the sixth Anteater player to be named to the league’s first team and is the first since Angie Ned garnered the award in 2005-06. The sophomore leads the team in scoring (19.6) and rebounding (11.2) overall and joins Cal Poly’s Kristina Santiago as the only two players in the conference to average a double-double on the year. She leads the Big West and ranks 27th nationally in double-doubles with 13 in 21 games. Maly-Karros scored 35 points at Pacific which is the most by a Big West Player this year.
Jade Smith-Williams earned honorable mention distinction in her first season with Anteaters. Smith-Williams is second on the team and is seventh in the conference in scoring at 12.9 points per game and leads the team and is fourth among Big West players in assists with a 4.2 average. The junior guard has recorded 30 or more points three times this year, including a career-best 33 against Long Beach State.
UCI’s three honorees is the most in one year since the 2002-03 squad had five selections.
UC Irvine, the seventh seed, will battle sixth-seeded Cal State Fullerton at 2:30 p.m. in the first round of the Big West Tournament Wednesday (Mar. 10) at the Anaheim Convention Center.
