April 14, 2008
San Diego, Calif.--The Irvine women traveled 3 boats to the 35th Annual San Diego Crew Classic held in Crown Point Shores, San Diego on April 5th and 6th. This regatta is the largest regatta held in Southern California with over 3,500 athletes from more than 100 clubs, universities and colleges. The novice women's eight raced hard down the 2,000 meter course to place 4th in their heat and making it into the petite final. The petite final had a shaky start but the crew did not give up and raced a good race to place 5th in the final. The varsity women did not row their best race in their heat but qualified for the 3rd final. In the final they raced a strong race placing 2nd by 2 seconds over the 3rd place Villanova. The third boat that the women traveled to San Diego was made up of 2 varsity rowers, 6 novice rowers and 1 varsity coxswain. They competed in the women's open category and were able to accomplish a first for UC Irvine women. The open eight raced a solid race placing 2nd in their heat making it into the grand final. This is the first time that a women's boat has ever made it into the grand final at San Diego Crew Classic. The open boat placed 6th overall out of 14 crews.
