Irvine Women Race Chapman, UCSB, and Long Beach State
April 14, 2007
Newport, Calif.- The UC Irvine varsity women were first off the line taking advantage of a moderate tailwind on Saturday April 14th on their home course in Newport Beach. Racing against rivals Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara and Chapman the Lady 'Eaters survived a rough shift down to race pace through moderate chop in the turning basin. Finally settling into a solid and smooth rhythm with 1400 meters to go, Irvine found themselves fighting from behind to close a margin of six seats with Long Beach Sate and get ahead in an even battle with UC Santa Barbara. With 250 to go the Anteaters tapped into their sprint and pulled ahead of Santa Barbara and closed the gap on Long Beach finishing just shy of the win, earning second place.
The UC Irvine novice women jumped off the line settling into an aggressive pace with long fluid strokes and aggressive finishes. Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara and Chapman could not counter and the Anteaters captured the win.
Irvine's second win for the day was brought home by the Novice Women's four. From start to finish the Anteaters proved a dominating force on the water as they widened the gap between themselves and the field crossing the line 7 seconds ahead of Long Beach State. (Results)
UC Irvine takes a break from racing next weekend returning April 28-29 for the WIRA Championships in Sacramento on Lake Natoma.
