UC Irvine in Fifth Place After First Day of NCAA West Regional

TEMPE, Ariz. --- Senior Jane Chin shot a 5-under par 67 Thursday and the UC Irvine women's golf team is tied for fifth place after the first day of the NCAA West Regional at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona State leads the 21-team field after shooting 15-under 273 Thursday. Arizona, Texas and Texas A&M are tied for second at 288.

UCI, USC, Arkansas and TCU share fifth place at 289.

USC's Belen Mozo is the individual leader after a 6-under 66, one shot ahead of Chin and Arizona State's Carlota Ciganda.

UCI's Joy Trotter is in 32nd place after shooting 73, Lalita Patipaksiri is 44th at 74, Hillary Packard is 54th at 75 and Patty Chawalitmetha 86th at 78.

Eighteen holes each are scheduled for Friday and Saturday with the top eight teams following three rounds advancing to the NCAA Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md., May 19-22.

UCI, playing with Arizona and California, begins play Friday at 11:30 a.m. off the 10th tee.
