UC Irvine Wins New Mexico State Invitational With School Record Round; Jane Chin Wins Again
Oct. 15, 2008
Las Cruces, N.M. - The UC Irvine women's golf team won the Price's "Give `Em Five" Invitational after shooting a school record 286 on the final round at the New Mexico State Golf Course Wednesday.
The Anteaters captured the title with a 54-hole total of 881 (293-302-286). The three day total ranks second in the UCI record books behind the score of 878 (295-293-290) set in 2005 at the Spartan Invitational. UCI's 18-hole total of 289 Wednesday, betters the previous school record of 289 set at the Las Vegas Founders Collegiate Showdown in 2004.
UC Irvine led from start to finish, finishing 18 shots ahead of second place Baylor (899). Oklahoma was third (903), while Oral Roberts is fourth (906) and Missouri was fifth (908).
It is the second consecutive tournament win for the Anteaters and the 15th in school history. It is the second time in school history that a team has won back-to-back tournaments joining the 2002 squad that won the BYU Dixie Classic and then the Big West Championship in the first year of the program.
"We played really solid golf tee to green," head coach Julie Brooks said. "I'm super proud of the girls. They have been working really hard on their games."
Senior Jane Chin took home medalist honors for the second consecutive tournament with a three day total of 212 (70-74-68). Chin entered the final round in second place, but shot a 68 to top the leaderboard, four shots ahead of Colorado State's Kasey Clausen, who shot a tournament low 67 Wednesday to move into second. She led the tournament field with 13 birdies and also led in Par 5 scoring with a 4.50, -6 mark.
Chin joins Walailak Satarak (2002) and Selaneé Henderson (2007) as the only UCI golfers to win back-to-back tournaments in the program's history.
"Jane is hitting the ball really well and her overall game is really solid right now," Brooks noted.
Junior Patty Chawalitmetha carded a two-under 70 on the final round to move up to sixth place with a score of 221 (75-76-70). Chawalitmetha led all players with 40 pars over the 54-holes. Sophomore Hillary Packard finished in a tie for 12th with a score of 226 (78-75-73), while freshmen Joy Trotter (73-79-75) and Lalita Patipaksiri (75-77-75) were tied for 15th after each recording a score of 227.
The Anteaters will close out the fall schedule traveling to the Kent Youel Invitational Oct. 28-29 at the Kapolei Golf Course.
