UC Irvine Participates In Big West Championships

UCI PARTICIPATES IN BIG WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS: The UC Irvine women’s golf team will participate in the Big West Championships next Monday and Tuesday (Apr. 20-21) at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.

 

The teams will play 36 holes Monday and finish with 18 on Tuesday.

ANTEATERS AT THE CHAMPIONSHIPS: UC Irvine has captured the last four Big West team titles and five overall in the team’s seven year history.

The Anteaters (908) captured the 2008 title with a seven stroke victory over UC Davis (915). Cal State Northridge was third (938), Cal Poly was fourth (941), Long Beach State was fifth (942) and UC Riverside was sixth (947).

 

Three UCI players have been individual champions, including last year’s medalist Kim Lorenzana, who won her first collegiate tournament (222-77-73-72) with a par on the third play-off hole with UC Davis' Chelsea Stelzmiller. UCI’s other individual winners are Selaneé Henderson (2006) and Stella Lee (2002).

 

Last year, Patty Chawalitmetha was fourth (227-77-71-79), while Hillary Packard was 20th (239-81-77-81). Mariko Makabe was 24th (245-87-82-76).

 

LAST TIME OUT: UCI finished fifth out of 14 teams at the Anteater Invitational with a 54-hole total of 919 (318-296-302).

 

Senior Jane Chin placed second after firing a 214 (73-68-73). Chin’s second round 68 was the lowest round of the tournament. Junior Patty Chawlitmetha finished tied for 18th with a score of 231 (82-75-74), Hillary Packard was tied for 31st with a total of 237 (80-78-79), while junior Henna Cho was tied for 41st with a score of 241 (83-76-82). Freshman Lalita Patipaksiri was tied for 48th at 244 (88-77-79).  Playing as individuals, Joy Trotter placed 15th with a score of 230 (76-76-78) and Mariko Makabe was 27th at 235 (82-77-76).

 

UCI CAPTURES THREE TITLES THIS SEASON: UC Irvine has captured three tournament titles this year. In the spring, UCI won the Fresno State Lexus Classic at the Copper River Country Club with a score of 891 (297-294-300). In the fall, the Anteaters finished first at the Price’s “Give’Em Five” Invitational and Coast BMW Invitational. It is the first time in program history that the Anteaters have won three tournaments in a single season.

ANTEATERS IN THE RANKINGS: UC Irvine enters the week ranked No. 24 in the latest Golfstat rankings and 27th on the Golfweek list.

Senior Jane Chin is ranked first in the country in the latest Golfstat rankings and is seventh by GolfWeek. Chin leads the country in Par 3 scoring (2.86) and is second in Subpar Strokes Per Round (3.71).
