Women place 3rd at San Diego Crew Classic!

San Diego, Calif.--The anteaters traveled to San Diego Crew Classic on April 4th and 5th. This is the 37th year of the San Diego Crew Classic the largest rowing regatta in California with over 3,500 athletes from more than 100 rowing clubs and universities. Irvine traveled a women's novice 8 and a mixed varsity and novice 8 which competed in the women's open competition.
The novice women competed on Saturday morning in a heat against Oregon Sate, USC, Kansas State, UC Santa Barbara, Miami and Sonoma State. After the first 1,000 meters the anteaters were in 6th place and were not giving up. Taking it up a notch in the third 500 meters Irvine dropped 2 seconds from their split and moved 1 second ahead of University of Miami. In the last 500 meters the anteaters increased their speed by 4 seconds separating from both University of Miami and Sonoma State. The novice women made Irvine proud by placing a solid 5th place in their very competitive heat.
The anteaters raced a women's open eight comprising of varsity and novice rowers. On Saturday morning the Anteaters lined up against USC, UC San Diego Alumni, Los Angeles Rowing Club, UC Davis and Santa Clara University. From the start of the race the Anteaters took off strong just trailing USC across the 500 meter mark. As the race progressed they secured their spot in the grand final finishing 2nd behind USC.
The grand final for the women's open eight took place on Sunday. Irvine competed in the grand final against Orange Coast College, USC, USC Alumni, Lake Union Rowing Club and UC Santa Barbara. At the end of the first 500 meters Irvine was in third place right ahead of OCC. In the next 1500 meters Irvine solidified a third place finish behind USC and USC Alumni.
Next up for the Irvine Women's Rowing is the Collins Cup against cross bay rivals Orange Coast College on Saturday April 18th!
