Aug. 29, 2008
IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine women’s soccer team (1-1) defeated Northern Arizona 1-0 Friday afternoon at Anteater Stadium. Senior Rachel Flemming (Mission Viejo HS) had the best scoring opportunity for either team early on as her shot from 30 yards out went off the crossbar. The Anteaters got on the board in the 87th minute as freshman Stevie Mersola (Burbank/Village Christian HS) found junior Amanda Phillips (Dublin/Fullerton College) breaking down the middle of the field with Phillips finding the back of the net for a 1-0 UCI lead. Senior keeper Erin Henry (Irvine/Mater Dei HS) had five saves on the day as she picked up her third career shutout. She also moved into ninth all-time at UCI in saves and now has 134 in her career. Keeper Tori Rocke had seven saves for Northern Arizona. The Anteaters will head down the coast as they travel to San Diego to face No. 24 San Diego Sunday at 6:00 p.m. at Torero Stadium in non-conference action.
