IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine women’s soccer team (6-5) defeated Pepperdine 2-1 Sunday night in non-conference play at Anteater Stadium.

Sophomore Alyssa Humphrey (Rancho Santa Margarita/Santa Margarita HS) headed in a cross from sophomore Tanya Taylor (Buena Park/Sunny Hills HS) in the 12th minute to put UCI up 1-0. The Waves would go on to tie the match in the 77th minute as Myriah Stockman kicked the ball up to Laura Cole who blasted the ball to the upper left corner from 30 yards out on the right side just out of the reach of the keeper. The ‘Eaters answered four minutes later as sophomore Milana Shabestari (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) took a free kick and sent the ball into the box where sophomore Sarah Busby (San Diego/El Capitan HS) who took a shot that was knocked back out where junior Amanda Phillips (Dublin/Fullerton College) headed the ball into the back of the net.

Sophomore keeper Erica Quevedo (Northridge/North Hills Prep) had five saves for the ‘Eaters. Keeper Kayla Stolte had three saves for Pepperdine.


 

 

The win is UCI's first win over Pepperdine since a 4-1 victory Septemer 20, 1998.

The Anteaters return to action Friday as they host Pacific in their Big West opener at 7:00 p.m. at Anteater Stadium.
