Wendi Whitman Named Women's Soccer Assistant Coach

March 2, 2010

IRVINE, Calif. - UC Irvine women’s soccer head coach Scott Juniper has announced the addition of Wendi Whitman to the coaching staff.

Prior to joining the 'Eaters, she spent six seasons at Long Beach State, with four of them as the 49ers lead assistant.  “We are extremely excited to add Wendi to our staff," Juniper said. "I have known Wendi for a number of years and she is a coach of high integrity and professionalism.  Our program will benefit from her years of experience in the Big West Conference and I am eager to start sharing ideas and philosophies with her.  She is emerging as one of the brightest young female coaches in the college game and our players will be exposed to an excellent mentor, teacher and role model.”

In her time at LBSU, she helped guide the team to an unprecedented three consecutive Big West Conference regular season titles and its first-ever at-large bid to the NCAAWomen's Soccer Championship in 2008.  Whitman has played a huge part in the program's recent success including directing the recruiting efforts and working with the goalkeepers and defenders.  In 2008, Whitman guided Liz Ramos to LBSU's first-ever Big West Conference Goalkeeper of the Year award.

Outside of Long Beach State, Whitman has served as an assistant coach for the Olympic Development Program in both the California Youth Soccer Association of Southern California and on the Region IV Regional Staff. She has worked with the top female goalkeepers in the regional pool and helped to coach age group teams for Cal South where she won regional and national ODP championships with several teams.

Whitman was a four-year letter-winner at Stanford University (1996-00), where the Cardinal advanced to three NCAA tournaments and won two Pacific-10 championships. Whitman was twice named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Academic team (1998-99).

Whitman earned her bachelor's degree in international relations (2000) and master's in social psychology (2001) from Stanford. She went on to earn her teaching credential from Cal State Northridge in 2003 and taught elementary school for two years. Whitman holds a USSF "B" license and several NSCAA goalkeeping coaching diplomas, as well.
