Women's Tennis:
No. 58 Anteaters Knock Off No. 42 San Diego State 5-2

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 58 UC Irvine women's tennis team (1-1) defeated No. 42 San Diego State 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU won two of the three doubles matches to take the doubles point. Junior Brooke Bartlett (Fountain Valley HS) and freshman Kristina Smith (Dana Hills HS) defeated Julia Wais and Emma Cioffi 8-4 in the No. 3 slot. In singles, Smith tied the match at 1-1 as she beat Cioffi 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 6 position. Sophomore Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep HS) put the ‘Eaters up 2-1 as she beat Alicia Aguilar 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 3 match. SDSU tied the match with a win in the No. 5 position and Bartlett gave UCI a 3-2 lead with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Roxanne Ellison. Freshman April Bisharat (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) clinched the team win for UCI as she beat Wais 7-5, 7-5 in No. 2 singles. Sophomore No. 109 Stephanie Hammel (Placentia/Valencia HS) closed out the match with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Julia Trunk in the No. 1 match.
