No. 53 Anteaters Sweep Loyola Marymount; Win 7-0

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 53 UC Irvine women's tennis team (2-2) swept Loyola Marymount 7-0 Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at LMU Tennis Center.
The ‘Eaters took a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Sophomores Stephanie Hammel (Placentia/Valencia HS) and Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep HS) defeated Jasmin Heckle and Bliss Nixon 8-1 in the No. 1 match. Junior Brooke Bartlett (Fountain Valley HS) and freshman Kristina Smith (Dana Hills HS) clinched the point with an 8-1 win over Audrey Bulkley and Jane Pringle in No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Bartlett gave the ‘Eaters a 2-0 lead beating Estell LaPorte 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 3 match. No. 109 Hammel downed Elisaveta Pironkoval 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 1 slot to give UCI a 3-0 lead. Junior Becka Kwan (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) defeated Melissa Valenzuela 6-0, 6-4 in No. 4 singles to give UCI the overall team victory. Byron made it 5-0 beating Pringle 6-3, 6-5 in the No. 2 match. Smith put UCI up 6-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Nixon in the No. 5 slot. Sophomore Hannah Hollday (La Jolla HS) closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Bulkley in No. 6 singles.
The Anteaters will play their home opener Saturday as they host Cal Poly in Big West play at 11:00 a.m. at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
