No. 48 Anteaters Hold Off Cal Poly; Win 4-3

IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 48 UC Irvine women's tennis team (3-2, 1-0) defeated Cal Poly 4-3 Saturday afternoon in Big West Conference play at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. Junior Brooke Bartlett (Fountain Valley HS) and freshman Kristina Smith (Dana Hills HS) defeated Amy Markhoff and Ashley Pane 8-2 in the No. 3 match for UCI’s lone doubles win.
In singles, sophomore Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep HS) defeated Steffi Wong 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 3 match to tie the score at 1-1. Junior Becka Kwan (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) gave UCI a 2-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Alexa Lee in the No. 5 slot. Smith put the ‘Eaters up 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Markhoff in No. 6 singles. Bartlett gave UC Irvine the team victory as she beat Diane Filip 6-0, 2-6, 7-5 in the No. 4 match. Brittany Blalock downed sophomore Stephanie Hammel (Placentia/Valencia HS) 6-1, 6-7, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match. Freshman April Bisharat (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) and Suzie Matzenauer battled it out in the No. 2 match with Matzenauer outlasting Bisharat 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(7) to conclude the match.
The Anteaters go on the road to face No. 50 Long Beach State Saturday in a Black & Blue Rivalry Series match at 11:00 a.m. in Long Beach.
