Anteaters Edged By Long Beach State 4-3

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The No. 51 UC Irvine women's tennis team (3-3, 1-1) lost 4-3 at No. 46 Long Beach State in Big West play Saturday.
The ‘Eaters won two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomores Stephanie Hammel (Placentia/Valencia HS) and Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep HS) upset the No. 55 doubles team of Jaklin Alawi and Rachel Manasse 9-8 (5) in the No. 1 match. Junior Brooke Bartlett (Fountain Valley HS) and freshman Kristina Smith (Dana Hills HS) beat Luzar and Cantlay 8-3 in the No. 3 match.
In singles, Long Beach State won matches at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 positions to take a 3-1 lead. Smith downed Julie Luzar 6-2, 6-0 to cut the lead to 3-2. The final two matches each were decided in the third set on tiebreakers as Anais Dallara beat Hammel 0-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) in the No. 1 match to clinch the win for the 49ers. Junior Becka Kwan (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) closed out the match with a 6-1, 5-7, 7-6(3) victory over Anna Jecmionka in No. 5 singles.
The Anteaters host Sacramento State Friday at 1:30 p.m. in non-conference play at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
