Anteaters Lose 4-3 to Sacramento State

IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 56 UC Irvine women's tennis team (3-4, 1-1) lost 4-3 to No. 47 Sacramento State Friday afternoon in non-conference play at Anteater Stadium.
The Hornets won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Katrina Zheltova and Clarisse Baca beat sophomores Stephanie Hammel (Placentia/Valencia HS) and Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep HS) 9-8 in the No. 1 match. Tatsiana Kapshai and Rebecca Delgado edged junior Brooke Bartlett (Fountain Valley HS) and freshman Kristina Smith (Dana Hills HS) 9-7 in the No. 2 match.
In singles, Sacramento State won matches at the No. 6, No. 4 and No. 3 positions to take a 4-0 lead and clinch the overall team victory. Byron then defeated Maria Meliuk 2-6, 7-5, 10-6 in the No. 2 match to make it 4-1. Smith came back to defeat Baca 2-6, 7-6, 10-6 in No. 5 singles. Hammel then concluded the match as she upset No. 46 Zheltova 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 in the No. 1 match.
The Anteaters host Washington Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in non-conference play at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
