Anteaters Sweep UC Riverside; Win 7-0

IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 64 UC Irvine women's tennis team (4-4, 2-1) defeated UC Riverside 7-0 Friday afternoon in Big West play at Anteater Stadium.
The ‘Eaters won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomores Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep HS) and Stephanie Hammel (Placentia/Valencia HS) beat Roxanne Plata and Angelique Corpuz 8-3 in the No. 1 match. Juniors Hayley Young and Miranda Young (Newport Beach/Tufts Univ.) clinched the point with an 8-6 victory over Taylor Raney and Natalie McKay in the No. 3 match. Junior Becka Kwan (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) and sophomore Hannah Holladay (La Jolla HS) beat Nadia Sakhakorn and Donna McCullough 8-7 in No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Byron put UCI up 2-0 as she beat Raney 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 match. Hayley Young defeated Plata 6-2, 6-1 in No. 6 singles to give UCI a 3-0 lead. Freshman Kristina Smith (Dana Hills HS) clinched the team win for UCI with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Corpuz in the No. 5 match. No. 80 Hammel beat Sakhakorn 7-5, 6-0 in the No. 1 match putting the ‘Eaters up 5-0. Kwan downed McKay 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 4 slot and junior Brooke Bartlett (Fountain Valley HS) concluded the match with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over McCullough in No. 3 singles.
The Anteaters host Cal State Northridge Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in Big West action at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
