Women's Tennis:
Anteaters Top Cal State Northridge 4-2

IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 64 UC Irvine women's tennis team (5-4, 3-1) defeated Cal State Northridge 4-2 Saturday afternoon in Big West play at Anteater Stadium. The two teams started with singles due to potential rain. The match lasted an hour before a two hour rain delay. Doubles was not held due to further potential rain. Sophomore Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep HS) put UCI up 1-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Nina Jaworowski in the No. 2 singles match. Maria Pistalu defeated junior Hayley Young (Newport Beach/Tufts Univ.) 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 6 match tying the score at 1-1. Junior Brooke Bartlett (Fountain Valley HS) downed Whitney Paluch 6-4, 6-2 in No. 3 singles to put UCI up 2-1. Freshman Kristina Smith (Dana Hills HS) put the `Eaters up 3-1 with a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Anna Yang in the No. 5 position. Junior Becka Kwan (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) clinched the team win for UCI with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Nigora Sirojiddinova in the No. 4 slot. Brooke Doane closed out the match with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-0 win against No. 80 Stephanie Hammel (Placentia/Valencia HS) in No. 1 singles. The Anteaters travel cross-county to face Cal State Fullerton Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in Fullerton.
