FULLERTON, Calif. - The No. 62 UC Irvine women's tennis team (6-4, 4-1) defeated Cal State Fullerton 6-1 Tuesday afternoon in Big West play.
The Anteaters won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomores Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep HS) and Stephanie Hammel (Placentia/Valencia HS) beat Tiffany Mai and Monica Rodriguez 8-1 in the No. 1 match. Junior Brooke Bartlett (Fountain Valley HS) and freshman Kristina Smith (Dana Hills HS) beat Jerusha Cruz and Erin Wiesener 8-3 in No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Hannah Holladay and junior Becka Kwan (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) defeated Karina Akhmedova and Malorie dela Cruz 8-3 in the No. 3 match.
In singles, Bartlett defeated Rodriguez 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 match. Kwan beat Wiesener 6-1, 6-1 in No. 3 singles. Smith downed dela Cruz 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 4 position. Junior Hayley Young (Newport Beach/Tufts Univ.) defeated Cruz 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 5 slot. Holladay topped Akhmedova 6-4, 7-5 in No. 6 singles. Hammel retired in the first set, giving Mai the win in No. 1 singles for Fullerton’s lone point.
The Anteaters return home to face UC Santa Barbara Friday at 1:30 p.m. in Big West action at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
