DAVIS, Calif. - The No. 56 UC Irvine women's tennis team (11-7, 5-1) defeated UC Davis 6-1 Saturday afternoon in Big West play at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
The Anteaters swept the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Clare Fermin and freshman Rebecca Kwan defeated Anita Athavale and Desiree Stone 8-3 in the No. 2 match. Seniors Lisa Shih and Jessica Broadfoot clinched the doubles point as they beat Robin Guiler and Emma Shapiro 8-4 in the No. 3 slot. Seniors Inna Agababian and Becky Bernhard defeated Herzyl Legaspi and Randi Schuler 9-8 in the final match at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, Desiree Stone tied the match at 1-1 as she defeated Inna Agababian 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 match. Becky Bernhard put UCI back up 2-1 as she defeated Randi Schuler 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 slot. Rebecca Kwan beat Emma Shapiro 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 5 match to give the `Eaters a 3-1 lead. Jessica Broadfoot clinched the overall win for UCI as she defeated Sidney Brady 7-5, 6-1 in No. 6 singles. Clare Fermin defeated Robin Guiler 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 3 match to put UCI up 5-1. Freshman Brooke Bartlett concluded the match with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Herzyl Legaspi in No. 4 singles.
The Anteaters will return to action Sunday as they travel to Stockton to face Pacific at 11:00 a.m. in Big West Conference action.
