Women's Tennis:
Anteaters Defeat UC Davis 6-0; Advance to Big West Semifinals

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - The No. 56 UC Irvine women's tennis team (14-7, 7-1) beat UC Davis 6-0 Friday morning in the quarterfinals of the Big West Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The ‘Eaters took a 1-0 lead after winning two doubles matches. Sophomore Miranda Young (Newport Beach/Tufts Univ.) and freshman Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep HS) defeated Herzyl Legaspi and Dahra Zamudio 8-5 in the No. 2 match. Senior Heidi Kaloi (Wahiawa, Hawaii/Kamehameha School) and freshman Stephanie Hammel (Placentia/Valencia HS) clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Randi Schuler and Desiree Stone in No. 1 doubles.
Senior Clare Fermin (Yorba Linda/Troy HS) put UCI up 2-0 as she beat Herzyl Legaspi 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 3 singles match. Sophomore Becka Kwan (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) defeated Jenna Kappel 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 4 slot to put the ‘Eaters up 3-0. Senior Ali Borowicz (Santa Rosa/Montgomery HS) clinched the team victory as she defeated Emma Shapiro 6-4, 6-4 in No. 6 singles. Sophomore Brooke Bartlett (Fountain Valley HS) and Heidi Kaloi each won their matches shortly after Borowicz clinched the victory for the final score of 6-0. The Anteaters will now face No. 3 seed Cal Poly or No. 6 seed UC Santa Barbara Saturday in the semifinals of the Big West Championship at 3:00 p.m. at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Results
