Women's Tennis:
Anteaters Beat UC Santa Barbara 4-3; Advance to Big West Championship

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - The No. 56 UC Irvine women's tennis team (16-7, 7-1) defeated UC Santa Barbara 4-3 Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the Big West Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The Gauchos took a 1-0 lead early as they won two of the three doubles matches. Senior Clare Fermin (Yorba Linda/Troy HS) and sophomore Miranda Young (Newport Beach/Tufts Univ.) lost 8-0 to Damion/Lozano in the No. 2 match. Bryanna Ojeda and Asagi Onaga defeated sophomores Brooke Bartlett (Fountain Valley HS) and Becka Kwan (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) 8-3 in No. 3 doubles. Freshman Stephanie Hammel (Placentia/Valencia HS) defeated Michelle Murphy 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match to tie the score at 1-1. Becka Kwan gave the ‘Eaters a 2-1 lead as she beat Asagi Onaga 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 5 match. Sofia Novak tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Brooke Bartlett in No. 3 singles. Clare Fermin put the Anteaters up 3-2 as she beat Natalia Lozano 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 in the No. 4 slot. Jill Damion beat freshman Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep HS) 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 in the No. 2 match. Senior Heidi Kaloi (Wahiawa, Hawaii/Kamehameha School) clinched the team victory as she defeated Bryanna Ojeda 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 in the No. 6 match.
The Anteaters will now face No. 1 seed Long Beach State in the championship match of the Big West Championship at 9:00 a.m. at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. This is the fifth time in the past eight seasons that these two schools have met in the Big West title match. LBSU has won each of the previous four. Results
