No. 59 Anteaters Defeat Pacific 5-0; Advance to Big West Semifinals

No. 2 seed UCI shuts out No. 7 seed Pacific 5-0

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - The No. 59 UC Irvine women's tennis team (15-8) beat Pacific 5-0 Friday morning in the quarterfinals of the Big West Championship at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The Anteaters won two doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Clare Fermin and freshman Rebecca Kwan defeated Jolanta Twarowska and Sasha Fisher 8-5 in the No. 2 match. Senior Jessica Broadfoot and junior Ali Borowicz beat Olga Gumenyuk and Clara Schuhmacher 8-4 in the No. 3 match. The No. 1 doubles was not completed.

In singles, senior Becky Bernhard defeated Jolanta Twarowska 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 1 match to win her 11^th straight match. Senior Inna Agababian beat Svenja Arens 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 2 match. Freshman Brooke Bartlett defeated Olga Gumenyuk 6-1, 6-4 in No. 4 singles. Junior Heidi Kaloi beat Sasha Fisher 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 6 match. The matches at No. 3 and No. 5 singles were not completed.

This will be UCI's seventh straight appearance in the Big West semifinals and their ninth in the past 10 seasons.

The Anteaters will next play either No. 3 seed Cal State Northridge or No. 6 seed UC Davis Saturday at 9:00 a.m. in the semifinals of the Big West Championship at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
