NO. 58 ANTEATERS AT NO. 12 UCLA: The No. 58 UC Irvine women’s tennis team (1-1) will travel to Los Angeles Wednesday to face No. 12 UCLA at 1:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The No. 12 Bruins are 3-0 on the year. Yasmin Schnack is ranked 5th and Andrea Remynse is ranked 41st in singles nationally. The pair teams up in doubles and is ranked 10th in the nation.
WEEK IN REVIEW: The Anteaters defeated No. 42 San Diego State 5-2 Saturday. Sophomore Stephanie Hammel (Placentia/Valencia HS), freshman April Bisharat (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS), sophomore Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep HS), junior Brooke Bartlett (Fountain Valley HS) and freshman Kristina Smith (Dana Hills HS) each won singles matches in the win.
ANTEATERS IN THE RANKINGS: The Anteaters are currently ranked 58th in the country by the ITA rankings. Stephanie Hammel is ranked 15th in singles in the Southwest Region and 109th nationally. Brooke Bartlett is ranked 20th in singles in the region. The doubles team of Hammel and Courtney Byron) is ranked third in the region. The ‘Eaters ended the 2009 season ranked 57th nationally.
TOP RETURNERS: Stephanie Hammel was named Big West Freshman of the Year in 2009 as well as All-Big West first team in singles and doubles with the now graduated Heidi Kaloi. Courtney Byron was All-Big West second team in singles and honorable mention in doubles with junior Miranda Young (Newport Beach/Tufts Univ.). Brooke Bartlett was named All-Big West honorable mention in singles. Junior Becka Kwan (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) led all returnees with a 16-6 record in singles last season.
