NO. 35 ANTEATERS AT NO. 36 LONG BEACH STATE; HOSTS NO. 61 PENNSYLVANIA: The No. 35 UC Irvine women's tennis team (6-5, 2-0) will travel to Long Beach Saturday to face No. 36 Long Beach State in Big West play at 11:00 a.m. at the 49er Tennis Courts. The team will then return home to face No. 61 Pennsylvania Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

 


 

 

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS: The No. 36 49ers are 6-4 on the year overall and 2-0 in Big West play. No. 75 Hannah Grady is the No. 1 singles player for Long Beach State.

 

The No. 61 Quakers are 3-1 to start the week and will face San Diego State before arriving in Irvine. Ekaterina Kosminskaya is the No. 1 singles player for Penn.

 

WEEK IN REVIEW: The Anteaters went 2-1 on the week as they beat San Diego State 5-2 and San Francisco 5-2. The team then lost 4-3 in a close match to Saint Mary's. Freshman Brooke Bartlett (Fountain Valley HS) went 3-0 on the week to lead the Anteaters.

 

ANTEATERS RANKED 35TH: The Anteaters are ranked 35th in the country by the ITA rankings and is the highest ranking this season for UCI. UCI had it's highest preseason ranking ever as they started the year off ranked 37th.

 

The Anteaters finished the 2006-07 season ranked 35th nationally after a first round loss to Texas in the NCAA Tournament to finish with a 21-5 record. UCI was ranked as high as No. 28 in the country during the season as the team won the Big West regular season championship with a perfect 7-0 record in conference play.

 

ANTEATER LEADERS: Brooke Bartlett leads the team with a 6-2 record. Senior Jessica Broadfoot (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and junior Ali Borowicz (Santa Rosa/Montgomery HS) are second on the team with 6-4 records in singles this season. The doubles team of Borowicz and junior Heidi Kaloi (Wahiawa, Hawaii/Kamehameha School) is 3-2 on the year at the No. 3 position to lead the team.

 

SENIOR Becky Bernhard IN THE RECORD BOOKS: Senior Becky Bernhard (Roseville/Oakmont HS) was ranked as high as No. 81 in the Fila/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings in 2007. Bernhard was named Big West Player of the Week six times last season and a total of nine times in her career, more than any women's tennis player in Big West history and more than any athlete at UCI in Big West sports.
