UC Irvine Loses to San Jose State
Sept. 12, 2008 LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- UC Irvine out-blocked San Jose State 9.5-6 but was held to a .197 hitting percentage in a 23-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23 loss to the Spartans at the Four Points Sheraton LAX/LMU Volleyball Classic Friday on the campus of Loyola Marymount. The loss was the Anteaters' third straight, dropping to 3-5 overall while SJSU improved to 3-5. Redshirt freshman Alexandra Hauser led UCI's defensive effort with a career-high six block assists while outside hitter Lauren Kellerman added four. Senior Devon Sutherland registered 19 digs to lead all players. Sophomore Kari Pestolesi led all players with 18 kills while Shannan Homan chipped in 11. Setter Taryn Robertson dished out 45 assists. Trailing 10-7 in the first set, the Anteaters rallied to tie the set at 11-11. The Spartans claimed a late two-point lead at 22-20 on a kill from Niki Clement but UCI strung together four straight points on two kills from Chelsea Ellis and a block assist from the junior middle blocker. San Jose State narrowed the lead to one but Ellis connected with Robertson to give UCI the win. The Spartans used a three-point run in the second set to take a 14-10 lead and extended the margin to seven at 20-13 as UCI committed four attack errors in the run. A kill from Pestolesi brought UCI to within four points at 22-17 but SJSU scored the final three points of the set to tie the match.
SJSU stormed out to an 8-2 lead and never looked back. The Spartans led by as many as 10 points (21-11) with the Anteaters rallying to close the gap to six on three UCI kills and a service ace. However, San Jose went to Brianna Amian on set point to give the Spartans a 2-1 set lead.
The fourth set seemed to belong to the Anteaters as UCI established a nine-point lead at 17-8 on consecutive kills. At 18-9, San Jose State rattled off eight consecutive points to come to within one at 18-17. The Spartans tied the set at 20 points apiece and then took the lead for good at 23-22 on a kill from Emily Burke. Kelly Crow's put-away gave SJSU match point and a service error ended the match. |
