Sept. 19, 2008 NOTRE DAME, Ind. --- Senior Lauren Kellerman led all players with 16 kills as UC Irvine swept Western Michigan, 25-21, 25-23, 25-19, at the Golden Dome Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. The win lifted UC Irvine to 5-6 overall while the Broncos dropped to 7-2 on the season. Kellerman hit .371, committing just three errors in 35 attempts while adding eight digs. Kari Pestolesi added 12 kills and a team-high 15 digs while libero Devon Sutherland added 14 scoops as UCI recorded a 55-44 dig-advantage. Setter Taryn Robertson dished out 44 assists while Alexandra Hauser came one block assist shy of tying her career-high with five. Middle blocker Shannan Homan put away nine kills and Chelsea Ellis connected on seven of 11 attempts with one error to post a .545 clip. The Anteaters never trailed in the first set. The team took a three-point lead at 16-13 on a kill by Kellerman but watched as the Broncos tied the game at 18-18 on an attack error by Pestolesi. However, the sophomore outside hitter put the next ball away to give UCI the lead for good. WMU's Michelle Moore's attack error on set point would give the Anteaters the win. It was WMU's turn to take an early lead in the second set. However, UCI strung together four consecutive points to take a 13-12 edge with Robertson going to Homan twice in the rally. Western Michigan reclaimed the lead at 23-21 on a solo block by Jaime Gotham to prompt a UCI timeout. However, the Anteaters came out the huddle and recorded four straight with the last three kills by Kellerman to take a 2-0 set lead.
UCI fell behind briefly in the third set but quickly turned a 6-4 deficit into a 9-7 lead on two Western Michigan errors in the run. At 12-12, the Anteaters out-scored the Broncos 5-1 to lead 17-13 and cruised on to a 25-19 win, holding Western Michigan to a .000 hitting percentage in the final frame.
