UC Irvine Swept by Notre Dame
Sept. 20, 2008 NOTRE DAME, Ind. --- UC Irvine fell to 5-7 overall with a 25-22, 25-23, 25-23 loss to host Notre Dame (5-6) at the Golden Dome Invitational Saturday. The Anteaters, who defeated Western Michigan Friday, will face Liberty Sunday at 9:00 a.m. Kari Pestolesi led UC Irvine with 15 kills while adding 12 digs. Lauren Kellerman added seven kills while Setter Taryn Robertson and Shannan Homan chipped in five apiece. Robertson recorded 30 assists with nine digs while Devon Sutherland led the team with 14 digs. Chelsea Ellis totaled a match-high six block assists with Homan adding five. Notre jumped out to an early five-point lead in the first set at 7-2 and maintained a comfortable edge for most of the frame. UCI whittled the deficit down to two late in the match at 23-21 on a kill from Robertson but would get no closer. The Anteaters kept the second set close. The Fighting Irish led by two at 16-14 on an attack error by Kellerman but UCI tied the set at 17-17 on a Sutherland ace. At 22-22, UCI claimed the lead as Robertson connected with Alexandra Hauser for a kill. However, a kill by Notre Dame's Kellie Sciacca and two UCI errors would put Notre Dame ahead 2-0.
UC Irvine continued to battle in the third set as both teams kept the score close. Notre dame edged out to a 14-11 lead on a service ace but the Anteaters responded with three straight points on a Notre Dame error and two kills from Pestolesi. Hauser and Pestolesi denied Kristen Dealy at the net to tie the set at 22 points apiece but Notre Dame scored the next two points and Christina Kaelin put the ball away on match point.
